Pocket Rocket – Zandvoort

The mid-engined road legal fun car

Pocket Rocket – Zandvoort

The Pocket Rocket – Zandvoort began as a creative exercise, inspired by the timeless lines of classics like the Matra 530, Porsche 914, Lotus 7- and Elise. The challenge was to design an affordable, lightweight sports car using off-the-shelf components.

The name “Pocket Rocket – Zandvoort” pays homage to the Matra 530, which itself was named after a medium-to-short-range air-to-air rocket/missile by Matra Aérospatiale emphasizing its exhilarating performance. “Pocket” perfectly captures the car’s compact, agile dimensions. And what better racetrack to inspire a Dutch-designed, road-legal track car than the iconic Circuit Zandvoort? This name encapsulates the car’s blend of explosive power and nimble handling, all while paying tribute to its origins.

The process started with hand sketches, capturing the essence of those iconic vehicles. Quick Photoshop renderings and AI tools helped me to explore and refine the design before moving into CAD modeling, where the car truly took shape.

The challenge was integrating standard parts, like 80mm headlights and standardized rear lights, into a cohesive, unique design. Powered by a Honda Vtec engine, the Pocket Rocket isn’t just a concept—it’s a car meant to be driven hard and enjoyed fully on the streets and the track.

This project highlights my ability to transform a sketch into a concept.
